Two scores, two different decisions
Job-fit score vs. ATS score: what's the difference?
A job-fit score measures how well a particular opportunity aligns with your qualifications and preferences. RoleVerity's ATS readiness score measures how effectively your resume can be parsed, understood, and supported by evidence. They are related, but they do not measure the same thing.

Short answer
Job fit evaluates the opportunity. ATS readiness evaluates the resume.
Job-fit analysis
Is this job right for you?
Compares your resume and Career Profile with one job posting. The overall score is 80% qualification fit and 20% preference fit.
ATS readiness analysis
Is this resume ready to submit?
Evaluates parsing, structure, content, keywords, evidence, and human readability using either a broad or job-specific benchmark.
Side-by-side comparison
| Comparison | Job-fit score | ATS readiness score |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | Should this opportunity be worth your time? | Is this resume ready for a hiring system and a recruiter? |
| Inputs | Resume, Career Profile preferences, and one job posting | One saved resume, a career-family benchmark, and optionally one job posting |
| Primary output | Qualification, preference, and overall fit scores with a recommendation | Resume-readiness score, category scores, findings, strengths, and limitations |
| Best time to use it | Before deciding whether to pursue or save a job | After choosing a direction and before submitting a resume |
| What it cannot promise | That an employer will select or interview you | That a specific employer's proprietary ATS will rank you a certain way |
What the job-fit score measures
Qualification fit covers role alignment, capabilities, delivery evidence, domain experience, collaboration, and experience level. Preference fit checks salary, location, work arrangement, employment type, excluded roles, deal breakers, career track, and seniority.
Overall job fit = (qualification × 80%) + (preference × 20%)
A failed preference check produces Skip. An unresolved Review check or low-confidence analysis prevents a Strong or Priority recommendation.

RoleVerity calculates the final ATS readiness score from six categories. A targeted scan places more weight on alignment and evidence because an actual job description is available.
| Category | General | Targeted | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parse readiness | 20% | 15% | Whether the content can be extracted and interpreted in a logical order. |
| Document structure | 15% | 10% | Sections, chronology, headings, dates, contact fields, and consistency. |
| Content strength | 20% | 20% | Specific accomplishments, outcomes, scope, clarity, and action-oriented writing. |
| Keyword alignment | 15% | 20% | Relevant language without rewarding repetition or keyword stuffing. |
| Qualification evidence | 15% | 20% | How well the resume actually proves the qualifications it claims. |
| Human readability | 15% | 15% | Clarity, brevity, organization, professional tone, and recruiter usefulness. |
The practical workflow: fit first, resume readiness second
- Step 1
Analyze the opportunity
Use Job Fit Analyzer to decide whether the role deserves more time.
- Step 2
Prepare the resume
Run a targeted ATS scan using the exact job description you chose.
- Step 3
Review before applying
Correct supported issues, verify every claim, and make the final decision yourself.
Why the same number can mean two different things
Example: both reports show 84
An 84 job-fit score can mean strong opportunity alignment but still require review because salary is missing. An 84 ATS readiness score can mean the resume is strong overall but needs clearer structure or stronger qualification evidence. Neither score should be substituted for the other.
What neither score can prove
- Whether an employer will interview or hire you
- How a private employer algorithm is configured
- Facts, credentials, or results missing from your resume
- Whether a role or application is the right personal decision for you
Frequently asked questions
Is a job-fit score the same as an ATS score?
No. A job-fit score evaluates a specific opportunity against your qualifications and preferences. RoleVerity's ATS readiness score evaluates how effectively your resume can be read, understood, and supported by evidence.
Which analysis should I run first?
Use Job Fit Analyzer first when deciding whether an opportunity deserves your time. If the opportunity is promising, use a targeted ATS scan to prepare the resume you plan to submit.
Does a high ATS readiness score guarantee an interview?
No. It indicates that the resume performed well against RoleVerity's transparent readiness criteria. It cannot reproduce an employer's proprietary system or predict the employer's final decision.
Can two scores of 84 mean the same thing?
No. An 84 job-fit score summarizes opportunity alignment, while an 84 ATS readiness score summarizes resume readiness. Each score uses different inputs, categories, and weights.
What is the difference between a general and targeted ATS scan?
A general scan uses your selected career family as its benchmark. A targeted scan gives the supplied job description priority and places more weight on keyword alignment and qualification evidence.
Use the right score for the right decision
Find a complete posting, evaluate whether it fits, and then use a targeted ATS scan to prepare the resume you actually plan to submit.
